Our premium Michelle’s Pinot Gris is from one of our favorite Central Otago Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir Vineyards – Monterosa. This site produces stunning Pinot Noir with its perfect aspect and balance of cool and heat throughout its long season. The Pinot Gris is allowed to hang on the vine to develop flavor and texture without sugar getting too high. The 2017 season, while not the easiest to manage, has allowed us to do that and the result was some stunningly flavourful fruit to play with.
That said we didn’t need to do to much, some old Chardonnay barrels, bit of wild yeast, some time on lees and hey presto – awesome wine!
The nose is sweet and savoury like good white Bordeaux but instead of pineapples it’s grapefruit and crystalline ginger. The palate is concentrated and broad with a strong citrus grapefruit theme, but also spicy and with balanced acidity to the off-dry finish.
This is a bold wine and is tasting all the better for a bit of age. Best suited for enjoying in Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring.
