The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc oozes “warm season fruit” rather than “cool season herbs”... both can be great and when in combo, they can be amazing. The 2015 starts with melons, limes, and then passionfruit leading into musky, tropical papaya. The first taste is fresh, delicious, and as the wine invades your palate all the layers of fruit in the nose unfold, finishing crisply with a teasing sweetness… another glass please!

The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc gives aromas of grapefruit, golden delicious apples and pear with a touch of wild thyme. Light to medium-bodied, it's just a bit dilute, though appealing at this youthful stage for its freshness.

The wine shows excellent fruit purity and harmony, displaying lifted aromas of passionfruit, mango, lime zest and dill on the nose. The palate is concentrated and intensely flavoured, and shows lovely focus and weight, finishing beautifully long and succulent. A hugely appealing Sauvignon.

Fruit from Dashwood and the Awatere Valley, cool-fermented in tank to 12.9% alc. and 4.9 g/L RS. Bright pale straw-yellow colour, very clear on the rim. This has an elegantly presented and slender nose, with tightly bound aroma of passionfruit and tropical fruits, along with fresh, mouthwatering mineral notes and lifted white florals. The aromatics build in concentration in the glass. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is well proportioned with light and softly presented flavours of passionfruit, tropical fruits and fresh herbs. This has a fine, tight core and line, the wine guided by light phenolics and energised by fresh acidity. The wine flows with tension to a dry, thirst-quenching finish of passionfruit and minerals. This is an elegant and slender, passionfruity Sauvignon Blanc with refreshing acidity and mineral notes carried by fine textures. Serve with seafood and Pacific Rim fare over the next 2 years.

The 2015 vintage is a medium-bodied, intensely varietal wine, racy, with vibrant melon and green-capsicum flavours, showing very good delicacy and depth, and a dry (4.6 grams/litre of residual sugar), slightly minerally finish.

Winemaking

2015 was warm and moderate in crop size. So we had plenty of sunshine and warmth (what we call accumulated growing degree days) and not much on the vines to ripen. In viticultural terms the season was a bit like putting a V8 in a Toyota starlet, the car would get you where you wanted to go but just a bit faster than factory standard! What this means in Sauvignon Blanc is that flavours are going to trend to more tropical and be big wines with soft mid palates. The key to this year was retaining some acidity to balance the wines (kind of like adding some big shock absorbers to your starlet post engine replacement!) - it just makes the whole experience a bit more fun. All in all we loved the 2015 year, the wines are super fun to drink and crowd pleasers all round.
