Invivo Central Otago Riesling 2013

Rated New Zealand's Number. 1 Riesling by Cuisine Magazine. The 2013 Riesling was a star from the beginning, the grapes were in perfect condition with just a hint of shrivel and very little botrytis. This season brought a real depth of flavor that was noticeable from even the early stages of ripening and that has carried through into the finished wine.

The nose is classic Riesling with lemons and citrus but also an intense mango like tropicality. The lush sweetness of fruit is tempered with citrus like acidity that leaves the palate refreshed. This wine is a complex and intense expression of Central Otago’s incredible ability to showcase this variety’s amazing flavors. Invivo Central Otago Riesling is great on its own as the naturally lower alcohol makes this wine a lighter alternative, but not in flavor.

Well suited to cheeses and dried fruits and stunning with passionfruit cheese cake.

Reviews

"Wow! Where to start? I could go on about how beautifully aromatic this wine is, each sniff offering a wave of pacific rose apple, lime and hints of honeysuckle and the palate bursts with beautiful, cleansing acidity and delicious balance. The thing I really love about this wine is that it's a tease that keeps telling you there's more to come; yet it is generous at the same time. If you drink one Riesling this year - make it this one."
5 Stars, Yvonne Lorkin "Sip of the Week"
"Invivo Central Otago Riesling 2013. The juicy aroma is a blend of mineral and lemon meringue. Hints of honeysuckle deliver a headiness that is particularly attractive. German in style – this off-dry wine has loads of ripe fruit flavour counterbalanced by strong minerality and subtle herbal notes. Finishes long and generously. At 11 per cent, a wine like this makes perfect sense if you want to drink true to style without the wishy-washiness of some lower alcohol wine."
Marlborough Express
"Invivo Central Otago Riesling 2013. Light gold with apple honey on the nose and a very obvious honeyed sweetness in the palate – even when chilled to the bones the concentrated sweetness holds its ground but crisp apple-like acidity adds crunch and bite and the delicious, juicy, succulent finish just lasts and lasts. A wine that can be enjoyed right now. Why wouldn’t you? 5 stars and No.1 Riesling in Cuisine."
Sue Courtney, Wine Journalist
"A sweeter style of riesling oozing luscious golden peaches and lemonade but nicely balanced by a crisp dry finish. An attractive wine - just the thing for relaxing with in the sun."
Charmian Smith, Otago Daily Times
"This wine is an incredibly good buy and an excellent example of the riesling that Central Otago is capable of. Sweetish with luscious peachy flavour and generous but dryish finish."
Warren Barton, Southland Times
"Soft Riesling with a tantalising hint of sweetness and lime/grapefruit, pineapple and subtle rose petal flavours. Mellow, silken-textured wine in a deliciously easy-drinking style."

Winemaking

The cool bunches were gently whole bunch pressed and settled over night and the clear juice was racked off with some of the lighter solids. Using cultured yeast the juice spent around 3 weeks in stainless steel fermenting and as the yeast tired and the balance of sugar was deemed right the wine was cooled to -2oC to arrest the ferment and so keep the natural residual sweetness. The wine was then kept cold and on gross lees and continuously stirred for 3 months. Finally racked off these lees and filtered in September. Minimal fining was employed and filtration only as needed until bottling, where sterile membranes were required.
